It’s been a wet week here at the farm, but our fields sure did need the drink! We plowed and cover cropped some of our summer fields with crimson, & white clover to prepare for planting next Spring. Now these seeds are finally emerging from the soil and we are pleased.
Yesterday we harvested a few pie pumpkins from our small pumpkin patch and I must say it is starting to feel like October. This week we also ripped out half of our pepper and tomato field to make room for more cover cropping. With the light frost (yes, crazy) we got last Saturday night/early Sunday morning our basil and a lot of our heirloom tomato plants called it quits for the season, its ok though we were pretty tired of them anyways : ).
Radishes, all three varieties of our kale, tender baby lettuce, purple mustard greens, long awaited cilantro and a market favorite : rainbow beets are all showing up in our fall gardens! Before long -purple cabbage, carrots and onions will also make a late appearance for us to enjoy their sweet leafs and roots. In the meantime though, we are wrapping up the last two weeks of our CSA season and starting to think about the Winter time. Construction is well under way for the farm office and storage barn!
