Lately fresh from the sunny fields its: zucchini, eggplant, carrots, green peppers, cayenne peppers, jalapenos, cherry tomatoes, a bit of okra, lots of bush beans, the prettiest sunflowers you ever did see, and not to mention we have squash & cucumbers coming out of our ears. Sometimes we even have to use wheelbarrows to carry the massive amounts of cucumbers! (the large cucumber patch is pictured above)
Its hard to think about the fall, and cooler weather coming in, but now is the time for us farmers to sow fall veggies! Yesterday we started cabbage, cauliflower, leeks, and broccoli in the greenhouse. We were having a bit of deja-vu, since the last time we were starting cabbage it was February and looking like this:
Above is a before and after photo of half of the garden. This year has been amazing so far. Every week when CSA comes around we look at fields and think of how this all started as 2 acres of grass! Crazy! And to think every week, we are able to provide 3 guys with steady jobs who otherwise might not get a chance to have a meaningful job, feed 25 families in Nashville, and still have leftovers for the Farmers Market & restaurants.
Today on the agenda we are sowing the fall pumpkin patch. We’ve weeded, spread the compost, and next is to put those seeds in the ground! Oh yeah and pray for rain. Lots of cool varieties are in store for this new plot of ground. Now, patience until the fall!
We recently joined the crowd and got an instagram. If you have instagram too, and want to see photos of what we are up to each day, then follow us here: www.instagram.com/oldschoolfarm . Our square dance is coming up NEXT SATURDAY. So mark your calendars for July 19th, Y’all! As always it will include a lesson, so don’t let your lack of dancing talent stop you from joining the fun!
As always, we are at the Richland Park Farmers Market every Saturday 9am-12 and would LOVE if you stopped by to say hello, or grab some veggies/herbs/flowers/eggs or all the above : ). If you are picking up your CSA at the market here is what it will look like this week:
