We were blown away by the amazing show of community support at our Farm Dance fundraiser last Saturday. There were so many people from all different walks of life milling about the Old School – farmers, dancers, Millarrich community members of all abilities, longtime residents of Scottsboro (“I remember being in school here in 6thgrade!”), family and friends, friends of friends…. It was everything we could have hoped for and more.
Also a big thanks to the small businesses of Nashville who donated food, drink, and silent auction items – Especially Jackalope Brewery for donating two kegs of beer and selling us two at a discount, not to mention Halcyon Bike Shop, Las Paletas, the Frist Center, Porter Road Butcher, All Seasons Garden Supply, Little Seed Farm soaps, and so many more!!
We had a stupendous array of cakes donated for our cake walk, all of which were taken home (or eaten on the spot) with glee. If you haven’t ever been in a cake walk, well, it’s a big time.
The square dancing was a big hit! There was a balance of brand-new and experienced dancers. Our own farmer Rachel called a few (“Dive for the Oyster”, “Push Pa Shove Ma”….) as part of her side-project of becoming a seasoned dance caller. Everyone seemed to enjoy the organized musical chaos. Turnip the Beet and the Hogslop Stringband were incredible.
Now… our energies turn back to the farm, totally and completely. We’re experimenting with plowing implements and compost-spreading techniques, with varying degrees of success… Something breaks about every hour and a half. But our farmer friends tell us that’s normal.
We really hope to continue fostering community around the farm! We love seeing new and returning faces at our Wednesday volunteer days, as well as the welcome drop-ins that have graced the farm with their presence. Please give us a shout about how you’d like to plug in. We’re trying to come up with a system that makes it easy and fun for folks to come by, help out, and maybe walk away with some eggs or veggies (later down the line…).
