It’s been an exciting week at OSF. We’ve finally had a warm spell, and the timing couldn’t have been better. Our chickens also began laying eggs!! Good work ladies! They’re a breed called “Black Sex-link” a cross between Rhode Island Red and Australorpe. Rachel wants to name them all Henrietta.
In other news, we finally finished putting together our Greenhouse-in-a-box last week (That was an ordeal…). We also acquired all the ingredients for our soil-block mix (a la Eliot Coleman’s recipe), and Josh and David mixed it all together on Friday. Next we spread a few bales of straw in the greenhouse to Tuesday, we planted our very first seeds!
So basically, we’re starting to feel like Real Farmers. But there’s a restlessness that comes with Springtime… We have to wait for the soil to get to the right consistency for ploughing. Our friends Loran and Eric at Sulphur Creek Farm have offered to let us use their spader to till the field initially – Such good friends to have. Now we wait… But there’s plenty else to do in the meantime!
